Summer Youth Leadership Program

The Summer Youth Leadership Program (SYLP) is a transformative three-week summer program that empowers Asian American high school youth to explore identity, build leadership skills, and deepen their connection to community.

Who we are

Established in 1995 through the Northwest Asian Weekly (NWAW) Foundation, SYLP ran for over two decades and is now being relaunched with renewed energy and purpose. Though no longer operated by the NWAW Foundation, the program continues with the full support and guidance of its founder, Assunta Ng.

Held in Seattle’s Chinatown-International District, SYLP brings together 20-25 youth from across King County for immersive, experiential learning. Participants engage in workshops, community projects, identity exploration, and networking with Asian American leaders from a wide range of fields — including media, public service, academia, community organizing, broadcasting, policy and government, entrepreneurship, and much more.

SYLP alumni leave the program with more confidence in their leadership skills, greater critical analysis on issues facing Asian Americans, lifelong friendships, a strong network of mentors, and a proud sense of their Asian American background.

What we do

The Summer Youth Leadership Program empowers Asian American high school students to embrace their identities, develop leadership skills, and build strong community connections. Through immersive experiences, interactive workshops, and mentorship from local leaders, SYLP equips youth with the confidence, tools, and vision to lead with purpose and pride.
